RAP
Ramus Anatomic Plate
The Ramus Anatomical Plate (RAP) system was developed through detailed analysis of CT scans of feline mandibles, resulting in six anatomically contoured, compression plates designed to match the variability of caudal mandibular anatomy.
A case series of 13 feline caudal mandibular fractures treated using the RAP system demonstrated consistent and favourable outcomes. All cases achieved accurate anatomical reduction with restoration of functional, atraumatic occlusion, and no intraoperative complications were reported.
Radiographic follow-up (minimum 8 weeks) confirmed stable fixation, with no implant failure or screw loosening, and complete osseous union in all cases. Time to voluntary food intake ranged from as little as 1 day post-operatively, with many patients able to resume eating shortly after surgery.
Postoperative complications were minimal and manageable, with the most common being localised swelling. Isolated cases included transient exophthalmos and minor wound complications, both resolving with appropriate treatment.
This technique represents an advancement over traditional management methods, which often rely on prolonged dental bonding and fixation, preventing solid food intake for several weeks. In contrast, the RAP system enables early return to function, with patients often able to resume eating as early as the day following surgery.
Overall, the RAP system provides reliable rigid fixation with a low complication rate, delivering favourable clinical and radiographic outcomes in the management of these challenging fractures.
